Chapter 6

Now that she was here, Autumn wished she’d thought this through a little better. Seeing her parents wasn’t something she should be putting herself through. However, since she’d spoken to June earlier this morning, she knew it had to be done. The things her father had said to her had been horrific.

“He called me last night. Dad said I was to kill May and that she’s no longer a part of our family. Like I could do that.” Autumn asked her if he’d given her a reason. “Yes. He told me she’d neglected her duties as his daughter and left them, I guess he meant him and Mom, hanging dry. He also told me that even you would have known better than to come empty handed to see them. He told me he was in prison like ten times like I hadn’t any idea where he might be. I don’t want to do this. I’m not going to do this.”

“Of course you’re not. Let me think a moment.” Reaching out to her father, she read his mind and his anger at May. The reason was too ludicrous to believe, so she checked out her mother. Yes, they were both upset because May hadn’t brought them anything in the way of snacks and money. “You said they wanted you to kill May. Would you like to know why they want you to do that?”

“I don’t know. Do I?” Autumn had laughed then. And when June did, she felt better. “Tell me. I might well not believe it either, but tell me, so I’m armed with information if they call back asking me why she’s still up and walking around.”

After explaining to June what had upset them and that they’d shoved Autumn in May’s face, June was as shocked as she’d been. June sputtered around for a second before she finally spoke where she could understand her.

“Chocolate. They want me to kill May because she didn’t bring them chocolate? That’s the most…well, I was going to say the stupidest reason I’ve ever heard to want someone dead, but it’s not. The three of them deserve each other.” They both laughed again. “I’m so sick of them. I wish May would get her head out of her ass and realize they’re playing her. She’s always thought of herself as their preferred daughter. I think they had all of us thinking the same thing for a while. You would have thought she’d have outgrown this sort of petty stuff. But not May. She’s still calling them Mommy and Daddy. Like she’s a five year old.”

Now, here she was, waiting on her parents to talk to her. With a few strings pulled from Dylan, they were both going to see her at one time, and they had a private room in which to do it in. Once they were brought in, she wasn’t going to give them an opportunity to speak, just blast them and leave.

Her father came in first. She’d not seen him in at least a decade, and he looked like he’d aged several hundred years.
